Immigrant Communities Welcomed at Oct. 12 Event

Wicked Local Cambridge, October 1, 2019

The City of Cambridge’s Commission on Immigrant Rights and Citizenship will host its second Immigrant Communities Welcome event 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Cambridge Public Library Lecture Hall and Community Room, 449 Broadway.

The welcome event will feature three films from the documentary series New Immigrant and Refugee Visions, providing unique insider perspectives of these immigrants’ integration challenges and the contributions they make to our culture, economy and social fabric in Massachusetts. The filmmakers and their subjects will engage with the audience about their experiences as immigrants and with immigration to the U.S.

A light lunch including foods from various cultural traditions will be shared.

As legacy news outlets shut down or lay off staff, misinformation and conspiracy theories run rampant, blurring the line between fantasy and reality. Trust in our institutions of governance continues to decline, fueling an alarming rise in extremism and political violence across previously stable democracies. In the Global South, the impact of journalism’s decline has been even more striking, with the rise of a new generation of autocrats skilled in manipulating the online conversation to suit their consolidation of power.
